The Nikon D3'sbody is crafted from a tough magnesium alloy and is strong enough to withstand the rigors of professional use in the most difficult of situations, think war zones. The 3 inch high resolution LCD screen is bright and clear packing in 920,000 pixels. A live view mode is offered – allowing a scene to be viewed from the screen much like in a compact camera., a useful function but one that suffers somewhat from the inability to tilt the fixed screen.

The Nikon D3 features 51 individual focus points and 15 of these are cross-type AF points around the central area of the view finder. The camera can use these to recognise variations across horizontal and vertical axes and from this information accurately measures camera-to subject distance. User defined settings allow for the use of nine, 21 or all 51 points.

Colour metering is covered by a 1,005-pixel RGB sensor and Nikon’s 3D Colour Matrix system, a slightly re-tuned version of the system used by all recent Nikon cameras. Scene recognition technology in the Nikon D3 camera automatically distinguishes the subject and other details and this information is used to improve the auto focus, exposure and white balance. This feature is further used to improve focus and exposure when the camera is set to 3D tracking mode, enabling the user to capture moving objects with excellent clarity.
